Sisters, Cousins and Girl Lab Co. Inspired Shoot in Buffalo New
This session was so much fun! I love working with other photographers and their families. I met Michele about two years ago at a photography retreat in Moab, Utah. She’s an educator and portrait photographer based in Toronto, Canada. Originally, Michele, her sister (Nicole), and their kids had a session scheduled with us in December of 2019. They ended up having to reschedule, but then COVID hit and the Canadian border has been closed until recently. We finally had the opportunity to have their family photo session in Buffalo, NY just a few weeks ago!
Michele and her sister Nicole were visiting their parents, who live outside Buffalo, for the summer. So, the timing of their family photo session worked out perfectly. Their husbands didn’t join them on their trip, so it was just Michele, Nicole, and the kiddos. Part of the session took place in historic Delaware Park, and from there, we went to Lake Effect Ice Cream and walked around North Buffalo (I think the kids preferred the ice cream parlor to the park).
We were supposed to start their session at 7:00 p.m., but the clouds that day were looking a bit too ominous for me, so we moved the session up to 4:30 p.m. I was worried it would be too dark to photograph later in the day. But, as it turns out, I am not a weatherman. As soon as we started the session, the sun came out. Flexibility is an essential part of working as a photographer. I’m not a huge fan of shooting in direct sunlight, it can cast harsh shadows on faces and can be uncomfortable for the kids, causing them to squint a lot during the session. We made the best of it and found some shady spots to photograph in.
Michele, Nicole and their kids were a lot of fun to work with. And I’m so happy we were finally able to have their family photo session (and enjoy some ice cream).
Bonus fact: Michele, Nicole, and their daughters own a company called Girl Lab Co. The two daughters design stylish pins and patches, and their moms help to make their designs a reality! So, if you’re looking for some adorable and inspiring accessories, check out their website here!
