Family Photography Session at Sugden National Park in Naples Florida
I’m so excited to share with you a blog post from a recent family photography session at Sugden National Park. Now that we are approaching our 9th month of officially moving to Naples, we’ve had a chance to explore many more scenic spots to photograph families at. One of the parks I love photographing at is the beautiful Sugden National Park. It features a 60-acre lake, a freshwater beach, (with alligator sightings!), paddle boats, walking paths, and picnic areas. It’s a great alternative to the beach for capturing family memories in a natural setting along the water.
It always surprises me how many families with connections to Buffalo, NY we run into in Naples, FL. Renee and her family don’t just have a connection to Buffalo, they have a deep love for the city as that is where they started and grew their amazing family. They now reside in Naples, much like us, and I was so excited to photograph them as a family because they truly embody my ideal client. They were up for anything and told me when they booked, just tell us where to be and when. I decided on Sugden Regional Park, as it offers a wide variety of places to shoot, they have trials, green space, and even a lake that provides the perfect backdrop during sunset.
I have never liked to rush my family sessions and instead embrace a slowed-down version of how one might document a family. A lot of my approach revolves around the fact that I am shooting film, which is inherently a slower way to make photographs. That said, I truly believe a more relaxed session is easier on the family and on me, to ensure we get what you have booked me to get, which is timeless photos that will be passed down for generations. We started this session by chatting a bit until the light was perfect for our first backdrop which was a little green space where the light perfectly broke through the lush tropical trees. Soon after taking some images surrounded by greenier, we moved to the lake area where the white sand was just begging to be played in. It wasn’t long before everyone, even the parents had sand running through their fingers. I always adore sessions like this which are equal parts portrait and candid photography.
