Family photos at Silo City Buffalo New York
Hi, I’m Brian, and I’m the film and family photographer half of Shaw Photography Co! I’m so happy you’re here. Last fall, I had the pleasure of photographing the Faulkner Family at Silo City. The Faulkners live in Buffalo and they’re no strangers to Silo City. In fact, in 2013, I took their wedding photos at Silo City! A few years later, they had their first child in 2018, and I’ve been documenting their beautiful family ever since. I love having the opportunity to capture a family’s growth through the years. Watching my clients move from one stage of life to the next is one of my favorite things about being a family photographer. Having our wedding clients become friends and then expand into families and family clients has been one of the greatest joys of being a wedding photographer! We love this family so much!
Silo City is a fun and unique location for family photoshoots in Buffalo, New York. The towering silos along the Buffalo River used to store tens of millions of bushels of wheat and grains until the industry declined at the end of the 20th century. Now, the abandoned silos are getting a second life. Silo City has been repurposed into a community venue that hosts concerts, poetry readings, craft beer festivals, flea markets, craft fairs, you name it! You can even schedule a tour of the silos and learn all about the history of the structures and the grain industry in Buffalo. Apart from being a great place to visit, Silo City provides a one-of-a-kind backdrop for family photos, and it has become a popular photo location in Buffalo.
The session took place around 11:00 a.m. on an overcast fall day, which is normally an unusual time to photograph a family. Because Buffalo becomes more cloudy toward the end of fall, we’re able to squeeze in sessions during the day if we see overcast in the forecast! Unlike a sunny mid-day session at the beach, overcast skies are ideal for photoshoots. Overcast light is soft and flattering when it comes to portraits. Plus, a midafternoon family photoshoot lined up perfectly with their daughter’s nap schedule. Everyone is happier and more photogenic after a good nap!
The Faulkner’s family photo session was extremely easygoing. Another plus of having one photographer for all of your big life events is the level of comfortability. I have photographed them so many times that we are all extremely comfortable with each other. Being able to feel at ease in front of a camera produces genuine smiles and amazing family photos.
