Hilligas Family Photo Session | Hoyt Lake | Buffalo, New York
I’ve been taking the Hilligas family’s photos for the last 3 years, so working with them was easy and familiar, like slipping into your favorite fall sweater when the weather turns.
There are a lot of benefits to working with the same photographer year after year. For one, you’re familiar with that person, which makes things more comfortable when you’re in front of the camera. Also, if you have kids, they’re much more likely to be themselves around someone they’re familiar with. And authentic photos are always preferred over forced posey photos when it comes to little ones.
The Hilligas family photo session took place in late September during that sweet spot when the kids were back in school, but the weather was still warm. Normally, their photo session would take place in their home, but the family wanted to shake things up this year.
Much of their summer was spent riding their bikes as a family, so they wanted to send off summer with a bike ride photo shoot. We started at their home about 90 minutes before sunset and biked/walked to Hoyt Lake, near Buffalo, NY, which was less than a mile away. Luckily, summer was still hanging on, and the weather was on the warmer side that day. We were grateful not to have to bundle up during the photo session.
Because I’ve worked with the family for several years, the session was super easygoing. Their youngest was 6 months old at the time, so we had to take it slow here and there. And of course, bike riding with kids can get a little bit chaotic, but it made for some amazing candid shots. Adding a fun activity to a family session is always a good idea (especially with young kids) if you want natural, candid photos.
