Are you looking to travel to the Hudson Valley with your children and looking for some travel inspiration? We’ve taken a few vacations to the Hudson Valley over the last 10 years we’d love to share what we think is the perfect Hudson Valley Family Vacation.
A fall long-weekend trip to Accord, New York
Why travel to Accord, NY?
I was 15 weeks pregnant with our second baby (soon to be Remi), and we were looking for a place to relax and get away for a week that was also within a short drive from Buffalo, New York. Vera was one and a half at the time. Being pregnant, we wanted something drivable but still felt like we were away from home. Accord is nestled in the Catskills which makes it the perfect road trip location from NYC, WNY and Northeastern towns.
A small village nestled in New York’s Rondout Valley, Accord holds an expansive charm that transcends its small-town size. Here’s what we think makes it the perfect destination for a family vacation in the fall
- Stunning Foliage: Accord sits amidst the Shawangunk Mountains, renowned for an explosion of color in the fall. The landscape transforms into a patchwork of fiery reds, golden yellows, and burnt oranges, offering breathtaking views for scenic drives, hikes, and leisurely walks.
- Charming Small-Town Ambiance: Accord retains its small-town charm, boasting a walkable Main Street lined with quaint shops, art galleries, and local eateries serving up seasonal delights. You can soak in the relaxed atmosphere, stopping by cafes for a pumpkin spice latte or browsing through stores for unique fall finds.
- Farm-to-Table Feel: The Rondout Valley is a haven for farms, and Accord reflects this rich agricultural heritage. Farmers markets overflow with fresh fall produce – think crisp apples, plump pumpkins, and delectable local cheeses. You can also visit farms like Saunderskill Farms, one of the oldest continuously operating farms in the US, to experience the harvest firsthand.
- Outdoor Activities: Fall offers the perfect weather for outdoor adventures. Hike or bike along scenic trails, go for a peaceful kayak ride on the Rondout Creek, or simply relax amidst the colorful foliage in a scenic spot.
- Cozy Getaways: After a day of exploration, cozy up in a charming bed and breakfast or a cabin nestled amidst the mountains. Savor a cup of hot cider by the fireplace, take in the crisp fall air, and unwind amidst the tranquility of nature.
WHERE WE STAYED
- We found a unique Airbnb in a a 115-year-old church which had a lot to offer us for a week’s vacation. Who doesn’t want to stay at a church in a beautiful pine forest with a saltwater pool, hot tub, and fruit trees? A few things to note with this Airbnb is that there was no laundry and that can be a deal breaker for some parents while traveling with kids.

THINGS TO WITH KIDS NEAR ACCORD, NY
- One of the highlights of the trip was when we hiked the Minnewaska State Park Preserve. It’s a quick hike to the waterfall–quick enough for a young child. The view was stunning, and it was worth every step.
- Kelder’s Farm is a great place to go with younger kids and we spent two afternoons here with our toddler. One afternoon we went to visit and feed the animals. The second time we went apple picking. Vera, (then 1.5 years old), had a great time with the animal at the animal petting farm there. They also had fresh apple cider donuts and fresh vegetables from the farm for sale. They also had amazing PIES for sale that we highly recommend you buying if they are in stock while visiting. They were some of the best homemade pies we’ve ever eaten!
- Skate Time: A 10,000 square foot roller rink in the middle of the Hudson Valley? Say no more! There’s also a token-operated arcade and a cafe that serve beer, wine and some creative classic eats.
- Even though October was the very end of the season, we decided to go raspberry picking at the Westwind Orchard, as well. Raspberries are just too delicious to pass by.
WHERE TO EAT WITH KIDS:
- West Wind Orchard
- West Wind Orchard wins for our personalized pick. After picking fresh raspberries, we decided to grab a bite right on site. We sat outside and enjoyed pizza and gnocchi (both were delicious!) . Music was playing while kids were running around playing and families were relaxing by outdoor fire pits. They were super family-friendly there–a big plus for anyone traveling with children. There’s also a very cute shop on site full of local goods.
- Stone House Tavern
- A lively gastropub boasting a warm and inviting atmosphere. The menu features classic American comfort food and they also have a wide selection of local beers on tap.
- Rough Cut Brewing
