Doughtery Family | Adirondack Family Photos
The Doughtery family photo session took place in and around the family’s home in Saranac, NY. Saranac is a small town in upstate New York nestled in the Adirondack Mountains. The Doughtery’s moved to the Adirondacks about 5 years ago from the Buffalo area, which is where we originally met about 10 years ago.
Mary is an exceptional wedding and portrait photographer herself, and she wanted to document her family enjoying the outdoors before the summer ended. Even though we’ve always lived in separate cities, we’ve been lucky enough to enjoy a 10-year friendship with Mary and her family. This was the first time I’ve photographed her family, so the fact that she trusted me with the session and documenting her family was an honor.
I love when I get the opportunity to work with another photographer, especially a photographer I know so well. Don’t get me wrong, I love photographing any family, but there’s something special and effortless about working with another photographer and their family during a session.
We started the session about 90 minutes before sunset. Most of our time was spent in the woods or at the lake, but our first location was the family home. From there, we took a short drive to a local trailhead. The trail ended at the lake, which was the family’s favorite summer hangout spot. It was the end of September, so it was still warm enough to swim. There was a large rock that the kids (and their parents) loved to jump off of into the lake. The air was warm, but the water was freezing! Mary and her family didn’t seem to mind. They had so much fun jumping into the water, and I loved being able to capture those authentic family moments.
After a brisk swim, we ended the session with a canoe ride as the sunset behind the mountains. Mary’s husband Matt, loves the outdoors and taking his family on adventures, so a sunset canoe ride was the perfect way to end our session. Honestly, the day felt much more like an enjoyable evening with friends than a photo session. The day was stress-free and the Doughtery family understood that in order to have a great family photo session, moments have to happen organically. Doing an activity that the family loved during the session was the perfect way to capture organic moments of joy.
